Lou Dobbs Tonight -- CNN -- March 5L.A. Mayor Villaraigosa: We need to insure that the victims of crime that witnesses to crime come forward and so we don't want them to believe that we're going to report them to ICE... (Special Order 40)[...]U.S. Attorney General Gonzales: These [vicious gangsters] are individuals who've run into a spell of tough luck... I'm equally concerned that we're taking steps as a government... to provide educational programs, to provide job opportunities..."Dobbs: ..poverty and the lack of education are certainly drivers contributing to membership in gangs rising but there is not a single thing that a U.S. Attorney General can do - his job is to be the chief law enforcement officer. CNN Lou Dobbs - video:Amnesty Supporters Say Current Immigration System Broken, So Let's Fix it by Legalizing 12 Million Aliens The one thing the Bush administration, congressional Democrats and Republicans agree on is the current immigration system is broken. Fake Social Security cards are so abundant, it's a joke. Lawmakers wanted to pin down Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez on their position on immigration. Democrats pushing so-called comprehensive immigration reform expect the White House to do more heavy lifting after last year's failed efforts. That means convincing Republicans, many of whom don't buy the sanitized phrase, "earned legalization," but see it as blanket amnesty. Secretary Gutierrez said the White House is on record favoring a guest worker program and legalizing the 12 million-plus illegal aliens. Some, like Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), are not convinced a guest worker, an amnesty program, is even necessary. "Why does it make sense to have an influx of an additional workforce when we have 10 million Americans that aren't employed today and real wages for those people at those entry-level jobs aren't rising?"

CNN Late Edition -- March 4Bush: We cannot fully secure the border unless we take pressure off the border. And that requires a temporary worker program. We should establish a legal and orderly path for foreign workers to enter our country to work on a temporary basis..Blitzer: You have a problem with that?Tancredo: Hello, Mr. President, Wolf, we have it. There are literally scores of programs that we now operate to let people come into this country legally... Let's talk about H2A visas (agricultural visas)...there are no limits on those visas. Lou Dobbs Tonight -- CNN -- March 2Rohrabacher: Sutton chose to disregard the information, despite the evidence provided by the DEA. Sutton's continuous attempts to paint a benign picture of the drug smuggler is not only disingenuous, but it amounts to misleading the jury and the public.Gonzales: There's a lot out there, a lot of misinformation out there about what happened in this particular case, but the agents had the opportunity to present the facts to a jury in Texas, and the jury concluded that, in fact, these two agents broke the law. And people in law enforcement who break the law should be held accountable. No question about it. And that's what's happening here.Wian: Gonzales refused to take follow-up questions on why his prosecutors kept key information from the jury, including the Aldrete- Davila's drug-smuggling history, escalating violence on the Mexican border, and other evidence that could have helped exonerate agents Ramos and Compean. Senate Judiciary Hearing on Immigration -- February 28Sen. Feingold: A 2005 Cato Institute study...found that the probability of stopping an undocumented immigration has fallen in the past two decades from 33% to 5%...Sec. Chertoff: I'm not in a position to associate myself with that study ...There is no question in many parts of the border the most cost-effective and most efficient way to to detect and intercept illegal migrants is high-tech - things like radar. (read: I don't know how they get through, but I do know how to stop them.)Sen. Feingold: I'm encouraged to hear that. Would you specifically say in many border areas those types of technologies will be both more effective and less expensive than building hundreds of miles of fencing which is estimated to cost $3 to $5 million per mile?Sec. Chertoff: I would agree with that... Watch this exchange (Broadband) Watch most of hearing (Dial-up)
